NATURAL DYE & SHIBORI, BATIK & INDIGO DYEING, WEAVING & EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP – HOA TIEN BROCADE STUDIO, HANOI

Textile Linker collaborates with Thai ethnic artisan Sam Thi Tinh to organize a range of textile workshops at her studio in Hanoi, and visit her hometown – Hoa Tien craft village in Nghe An province. She is daughter of Mrs Sam Thi Bich, leader of Hoa Tien Cooperative. She learn natural dye, weaving and embroidery with her mother and grand-mother when she was young. When visiting her studio, you can admire many decorative antique and ethnic textile of different ethnic groups and learn different traditional techniques,  such as natural dye & shibori, batik & indigo dyeing, Thai ethnic weaving or Thai ethnic hand-embroidery. Each workshop will last for 3 hours.

  • During natural dyeing workshop, you learn of her ancient techniques and masterful use of working with natural dyes taken from the garden, grey from tea leaves, lime green from terminalia catappa leaves, yellow from fibraurea, pink from tree bark “Phang” and blue from indigo dyeing. You also explore the traditional Japanese technique of Shibori tie-dyeing or Hmong batik techniques to create patterns on different material of fabrics like hemp, cotton or silk. Come away with your dyed fabrics on the day.
  • During Thai ethnic weaving or hand-embroidery workshop, you learn to weave on loom or hand- embroidery Thai traditional motifs and discover the meaning of pattern such as mythical animals (dragon, phoenix), wild animals (elephant, horse, deer, turtle, tiger), plants, flowers, objects of everyday life and Vietnamese alphabet letters into patterns in themselves.
